***I’m telling you in advance that some of these facts are fairly scary and some are darn right petrifying***

I’ve been using the Elta MD Physical SPF protection and I’m quite happy to report that I absolutely adore this product.

I’ve tried so many other products, but I always break out, but the Elta MD Physical SPF is perfect for a few reasons:

* It’s chemical-free

* It has a SPF of 41

* It’s tinted so it doesn’t look too white or ashy against my skin

* It’s formulated to combination and oily skin so it’s oil-free

* It doesn’t contain any smelly perfumes

As I said, it’s perfect. Now it’s true that you can only buy it at medical and cosmetic doctor’s offices; and it’s more expensive than brands you’ll find at the drugstore, but it’s well worth it!

I was reading their brochure and I found some of the most interesting and important facts about skin cancer awareness and prevention and I thought I’d share this with my readers!

I think it’s crucial that everyone takes the time to get educated about skin cancer because it’s truly no laughing matter AND it’s preventable!

I’ll be honest, I make a huge effort to educate myself as much as possible on skin cancer and the danger of the sun because sun damage affect people of any race, but there are many facts that Elta MD touch upon that I was completely clueless on.

Elta MD facts about skin cancer:

* Overcast days are no better than sunny days because 79-80 per cent of the sun’s ultraviolet rays can get through clouds.

* The sun is about 80 per cent stronger when reflected off sand and snow.

* The sun’s rays increase in intensity about 4 per cent for every 1,000 foot rise in altitude (this should be a warning for skiers and snowborders).

* It’s better to engage in outdoor sports before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m. If that’s not possible, try to avoid being out at high noon.

* UVA rays can pass through office and car glass.

* UVA rays will penetrate deep into the skin layers.

* UVA rays are present all day every day of the year.

* UVA rays are 20 times more abundant than UVB rays.

* UVB rays, which cause sunburns and cause the skin to tan, are stronger in the summer.

* There are 1.3 million new cases of skin cancer reported each year in America.

* More than one person per hour dies of skin cancer in the U.S.

* More than 90 per cent of all skin cancers are caused by sun exposure.

* Less than 33 per cent of adults, adolescents and children use sun protection on a daily basis.

* Skin cancer kills more women under 30 than any other form of cancer including breast and ovarian cancer.

* A person’s risk for skin cancer doubles if he or she has had five or more sunburns in their lifetime.

* There is 75 per cent increase of melanoma risk among those who used indoor tanning booths in their teens and twenties.

The Elta MD brochure I’m quoting these facts from show the photo of an elderly man who has fairly leathery looking skin and his skin is almost completely covered in small yellow dots. The statement in a red box at the bottom of the photo is simply terrifying:

“This eighty-four-year-old man has had over 600 skin cancers removed. Each adhesive dot represents a removed lesion”.
